Smoking Cigars Like A Boss: An Introduction

Cigar smoking is not for everyone, but it is something that I sincerely enjoy. Nothing gives me ultimate relaxation like a glass of red wine and a nice stogie! Cigars are just like liquor and beer the first time you tried it. It is an acquired taste. Each brand and type of cigar tastes different. While the wrapper does not entirely determine the flavor of the cigar, darker wrappers tend to produce a sweetness, while lighter wrappers usually have a “drier” taste. Whether a cigar is mild, medium, or full bodied does not correlate with quality. Some words used to describe cigar flavor and texture include; spicy, peppery (red or black), sweet, harsh, burnt, green, earthy, woodsy, cocoa, roasted, aged, nutty, creamy, cedar, oak, chewy, fruity, and leathery.
The closed end (or head) of a cigar is the end that you put into your mouth, but you have to cut it, first. When a cigar is hand rolled, a cap is put on the head of the cigar to keep it from unraveling and drying out. A cigar should not be cut until you are ready to smoke. There are three styles of cuts, and several types of cutters, but the straight cut made with a guillotine cutter is the most common. Hold the cigar with one hand and the guillotine with the other, then insert the head of the cigar into the guillotine and cut into the cap, usually about 1/16 to 1/8 of an inch down. If the head of the cigar is shaped like a cone, then cut into the cone, but not quite at the widest part. In any case, do not cut into the body of the cigar. That would cause the wrapper to unravel, and ruin your smoking experience.
Never Inhale a cigar, and a cigars taste is entirely different than a cigarette (which are totally nasty to me). The best way to look like a beginner is to light it with a cheap plastic lighter. You need to invest in a nice steel zippo lighter and never let the actual flame touch the cigar. Hold the cigar slightly above the flame and rotate the cigar in your mouth until your cigar is evenly lit.
There are so many different types of cigars, with the most notorious being “Cuban” cigars. Cuban cigars are rolled from tobacco leaves found throughout the country of Cuba. The filler, binder, and wrapper may come from different portions of the island. All cigar production in Cuba is controlled by the Cuban government, and each brand may be rolled in several different factories in Cuba. Cuban cigar rollers or “torcedores” are claimed by cigar experts to be the most skilled rollers in the world. Torcedores are highly respected in Cuban society and culture and travel worldwide displaying their art of hand rolling cigars. John F. Kennedy is the reason Cuban cigars are illegal in the United States as he imposed a trade embargo on Cuba to sanction Fidel Castro’s communist government. (Most people do not know that he ordered 1200 Cuban cigars beforehand and didn’t sign the embargo until after they were delivered to him). You can however purchase ”Cubans” in Canada or Mexico, just don’t try to bring them back with you.
